Shop Profile
Dunedin is home of the original R&R Sports, but it started life as Recycled Recreation, specialising in second hand sports gear back in 1985. All that has changed over the years and now 98% of our sales are in new products and are world renowned NZ and international brands. The store occupies all 3 floors of the historic A&T Burt head office. Although a lot of the original features were stripped in the building's earlier life we have tried to maintain as much of the old feel of the store as possible. Despite the fact that we have nearly 15,000 sq. ft the shop has a stuffed to capacity feel. Customers love to come and explore all the nooks and crannies of the shop!
The store stocks wetsuits, surf boards, bodyboards, water skis and wakeboards, packs and sleeping bags, bikes, outdoor footwear, boots and sandals, snowboards, skis, snow and surf clothing and Kayaks. We have a full ski and snowboard workshop as well as a leading bike workshop. We have world renowned and experienced ski and snowboard boot fitters.
The store stocks leading national and international brands – Icebreaker, Giant, Jamis, Trek, GT, Marmot, Mountain Equipment, Northface, Mountain Hardware, Columbia, Rossignol, Burton, Salomon, Volkl, K2, Quiksilver, Roxy, O'Neill, Rip Curl, Osprey, Vaude, Deuter, Coleman, Freedom, Merrell, Meindl, Teva, HO, Hyperlite, Connelly, CWB, Liquidforce, and so much more.
Our bike department specialises in providing excellence in service for everyone from the recreational rider to the serious downhiller or road racer. We have a full cycle workshop that is well reknowned for its repair quality and pricing. Our staff also ride bikes and we use their experience, paired with ‘silicon coach’ technology to ensure we get the correct bike fit for you. We stock mountainbikes, roadbikes, kids bikes, BMX, Commuting and serious downhill bikes.
On the camping side we also have the largest number of tents on permanent display in Dunedin (20+). This gives you the opportunity to truly compare the internal useable sizes of the tents and make an informed choice. Canvas, Dome and Adventure tents and all the accessories you will need from furniture and cookers to headlamps.
We also stock a good range of secondhand surfboards. If you need to trade-in or upgrade to a new board – bring it in your old one (with your ID) and we’ll help you out. We are a chain of 9 stores nationwide from Auckland to Dunedin.
Staff Profiles
Aaron
Aaron is our bike workshop manager, if he is not busy pulling bikes apart and tunning them up you will find him out on one of his many downhill bikes throwing himself off cliffs...thats if he hasn't already got a broken back or ankle! He loves big jumps, hitting trees and hospital visits. Any other dirt on him is probably inappropriate for this page...come in and ask him yourself he loves to talk!
Bryn
Bryn is a Dunedin boy but has spent 5 years in Colorado as a ski instructor at ‘Winter Park’ . He's also spent 3 years in Massachusetts. Bryn gained his level one Ski Instructors Certificate at Cardrona. He knows his product inside out when it comes to skis & skiboots and is a dab hand in our ski workshop also. He’s also into rockclimbing, underwater hockey, and beers with the boys.
Deb
Debs - where do we start...........she's the R&R Camp Mother no.1 being in charge of our HR functions. She is also the legal head, dog walker, chief functions organiser, special projects manager, PA to Mat, spell checker, and more...........She really is the most organised and efficient R&R staffie - we affectionately call her 'Detail Deb'. Dots her I's and crosses her T's (if everyone had as much attention to detail that Deb did, the world would be one smoothly oiled machine).
Duncan
"Dunc" is Dunedins shop manager and his speciality is being loud. Thats the good thing about Duncan - its easy to find him because you usually hear him anyway. He knows the tramping and camping product inside out, and he's pretty knowledgeable about the white stuff as well, having spent a few seasons overseas in Colorado. He is also a pretty mean waterskiier and wakeboarder and loves technical questions. Well known around the store for breaking into song at random moments he'll be a sure candidate for karaoke sing-a-longs when the infamous R&R Christmas bash comes around.
Erin
Our inhouse mountain biking racer, Erin is often out pounding the trails on her Mountain bike or getting fitter (if thats possible) on her road bike! Erin has been with R&R for about 5years now on and off if shes not here with us she is probably off at Coronet Peak Ski Field where she spends each winter working as a Ski Patroller for the season. Erin is a real outdoors enthusiast and and really knows all there is to know about our outdoor products and gear through her own experience of using them!
Flo
Flo is one of two Border Collies in our Dunedin store and she is our second youngst staff member; another one of Miff's wee little treasures! Flo is very good at greeting customers on the shop floor but does now and then tend to wander out the door with them...she now has a clothing security tag on her coller at all times, so everyone is warned if she does go walk about.
Helena
Helena hails from Sweden via the UK and many other countries. Our little Swedish gal is very well traveled having toured South America, Mexico and Cuba on the way to her favourite destination- NZ. Helena is thinking about entering the X-games for Rollerblading – she powers to work most days on her skates.
Mat
Trying to nail Mat down for a photo can be quite a challenge. You see, when Mat's not flat out working he's either out on his skis or mountain bike having a good time (though I'm sure we should be calling it 'product testing'). He is an acomplished multisporter and having been at R&R since 1994, he's built up an extensive knowledge of ALL the toys in the shop. So he knows his stuff, not just the theory and sales talk, but how the gear actually feels like to use - he speaks from experience.
Miff
Miff is known as the Boomerang. She started at R&R part-time after a physed degree in 1995 and has worked for for R&R ever since, except for three overseas stints. After running the Dunedin and then Auckland stores for a while she is now back in Dunedin doing Marketing and Sponsorship Management for the group, and any other ad-hoc things the boss throws her way.
Nat
Nat's our Icebreaker guru. She wears at least one layer of it to work everyday. Not that she's not tough, because she is - she surfs all year round in Dunedin after all. The child of hippies, it's no surprise that Nat loves to travel. She was born in Wales, brought up in Bristol and arrived in NZ via Indo and OZ. And there's still a lot more travelling in her - South America is next on her list.
Stefan
Oh Stefan, where do we start..........likes a good yarn. Seriously though, Stefan is our resident surf and wetsuit guru but he also knows a mean amount about all other R&R products. He's into anything to do with surf - surfing, talking surf, racing IRBs, talking surf, surf comps, talking surf etc. He is also into search and rescue, at least thats his reason for running out of the store on random occasions, usually occurs when there is good surf to be had. Stefan is a capricorn and likes walks on the beach with his dog...........
Swampy
Swampy is Flo's senior and is often caught telling Flo off and putting her in line. When Swampy isn't teaching Flo a lesson she is often found up on the third floor in the processing area, helping open boxes or just generally tearing boxes apart. Swampy was the only (very special) child of Mat and Debs - until the more recent addition of Daisy!
