The Most Popular Sports for Betting in New Zealand

Sports betting has a long history in New Zealand, and locals enjoy every facet of placing bets on their teams and athletes. It’s only natural that many Kiwis continue to place bets on sporting events, given the country’s rich sporting heritage.

Below are a few sports that are the most popular to bet on in New Zealand.

Betting on Rugby

Rugby is a very popular sport in New Zealand. The nonstop activity in this team sport keeps spectators coming back for more. There are various forms of rugby available in New Zealand. Both rugby union and rugby league are types of sport. The game of rugby union is played at a leisurely pace and on a global scale. The domestic variety of rugby known as “rugby league” is a fast-paced contest.

Betting on Cricket

Cricket is a popular sport in both England and New Zealand. First-Class matches, the original format of Cricket games, took 5 days to complete. Unless an international match was scheduled, they were usually played on a local level.

In England in the 1960s, a new form of the game called Limited Overs Cricket emerged and came close to becoming an international standard. Whenever it rained out during an England vs. Australia match, the innings were switched. Cricket is still played widely even though matches last only a day.

The Cricket Board of England then introduced a new format for the sport known as Twenty20 in 2020. The goal was to cut down on the time it takes to play a game by half. This was done to ensure that each game still allowed for things like classes and job interviews. Shortly after the first T20 encounter took place in Auckland, it was played for the first time outside of New Zealand.

Betting on Tennis

Tennis betting is available in New Zealand, although it is not as common as wagering on other sports. The outcomes of individual sets, games and entire matches can all be bet on as Propositions. Handicapped gamblers are placed with a point spread in mind.

Due to the addition of a fourth Grand Slam tournament, Tennis has attracted a larger audience and generated more wagers. The Australian Open takes place every year in January, while the French Open follows at the end of May through the first week of June.

Tournament play at Wimbledon begins at the end of June and continues through the first week of July. The United States Open, the fourth Grand Slam tournament, is played in the United States during August and September.

Betting on Cycling

Cycling race betting remains a popular pastime for people all around the world. It’s reasonable to say that the people of New Zealand have settled into a routine of betting on the outcomes of cycling races. In terms of fame, the Tour de France, the Vuelta an Espana, and the Giro d’Italia are the three most famous races. After May, all three events culminate in September.

Due to the proximity of the races, it is exceedingly unlikely that the same rider will compete in all of them. For the races, you need to know which rider will be competing. This way you may prepare yourself for what to expect from them in terms of physical preparedness.

Cycling, mountain biking, and BMX are the three disciplines that compete at the Olympic level. Using these strategies, a rider can compete on unpaved roads and other treacherous courses.

Betting on the Horses

In the 1830s, New Zealand had its first horse race. Considering how long the sport has been around, its continued popularity is hardly shocking. Despite its widespread appeal, bookies were effectively barred from the industry after widespread regulation in the 19th century.

Thankfully, the restriction was finally abolished in 1950, opening up a plethora of markets for horse betting across New Zealand. New Zealanders can now continue their favourite pastime of betting on the winner, runner-up, and third-place finisher. Bets can also be placed without making any offers, a practice known as “betting without.” A reasonable win can be made with this sort of wagering, and there is no need to focus on betting favourites.

There are a lot of different types of bets you can make on horse racing, so there are a lot of accumulators to choose from. With these, you can put many bets on a single slip. It’s true that the size of the pot grows as more people win. It is important, though, to always make winning bets. This makes it more likely that something bad will happen.

Sports Betting in New Zealand

With the passing of the Interactive Gambling Amendment Bill by New Zealand’s parliament in 2019, which made all forms of online gambling offered by local businesses banned, we felt that it was time to come back and look at the effect it has had and what options are available for New Zealander’s to bet online.

We know that New Zealand has a general prohibition on the provision of online gambling. This is highlighted in Section 9(2) of the Gambling Act of 2003; it states that “remote interactive gambling” (online gambling) is illegal unless it is authorised under the Act. The only providers authorised to offer online gambling products are the Lotteries Commission (Lotto NZ) and The New Zealand Racing Board (TAB).

This policy expressly excludes offshore operators as it states “The prohibition is on remote interactive gambling in New Zealand and therefore does not prohibit gambling conducted overseas. For example, it is not illegal for someone in New Zealand to participate in gambling over the Internet if that website is based overseas.”

This has created a really difficult situation for Kiwis that do want to gamble online as they are forced to play at offshore casinos that vary greatly in their ethics regarding player protection. We have also seen a major increase in online gambling over this period. Which is in complete contradiction to the objective of the act itself.

How to bet online in New Zealand

We have previously covered how to play at online casinos in New Zealand and will therefore focus on the sports betting aspect here. There are two options for New Zealanders when it comes to betting on sports online.

  1. Play at which is strictly regulated and operated from within New Zealand.
  2. Play at an offshore Sportsbook.

The tab is well governed and offers strong player protection mechanisms to ensure that problem gamblers are protected and that AML rules are adhered to. The downside is that it operates as a monopoly within New Zealand and offers players worse odds and very few bonuses.

Offshore Sportsbooks and Casinos operate in a much more competitive environment and therefore offer players better odds and a continuous stream of bonuses and promotions. The downside is that there is very little recourse for players that play at an unethical establishment. This can be minimised by doing research online but the risk is still very real.

Should you bet online?

The answer to this question is not a simple yes or no. Your risk appetite, ability to keep your betting under control and need for accessibility are going to be the determining factors.

If you are someone that does not suffer from any gambling addiction and has a reasonably high tolerance for risk, then online sports betting at an offshore operator is a good option for you. If you are less risk tolerant then playing at Tab is a good option but if you are someone with an addictive personality then we would recommend avoiding any form of gambling.

The regulatory framework for sports betting in New Zealand

The Gambling (Gaming Levies and Other Matters) Amendment Bill (the Bill) has received its third reading at Parliament. If enacted, the Bill would amend the Gambling Act 2003 (the Act) to provide for the regulatory framework for sports betting in New Zealand. It is important for stakeholders to understand the implications of the Bill and how it could affect them.
Why would New Zealand restrict sports betting?
At its essence, the New Zealand government sees the new law as protecting consumers from overseas competitors that undercut or enter the market with undue advantages. However, there is also another view: that the government is actually protecting the incumbent operators (Betfair, William Hill, Unibet, etc.) who have extensive web presence in New Zealand and the U.S., but whose websites are restricted by U.S. law.

Over the past 5 years, there have been interesting lawsuits all over the world between offshore sportsbooks and New Zealand law. Virtually every country has regulations when it comes to overseas sports betting. The U.K. is perhaps the most pervasive censor among the major European Union countries. There are additional bans in Australia, South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan.

Would there be a games section in the bill?
In order for the New Zealand government to pass any new laws, the matter has to be presented to the cabinet, which then drafts the legislation and sends it to Parliament for approval. This means that, ultimately, it is up to the government to decide if and how much regulation is needed.

This may seem like a negative outlook on online sports betting but it is not. We ourselves are big supporters of the opening up of online betting in New Zealand but until regulations come in that protect customers, from both the inherent risks that come with gambling and the monopoly that currently exists with New Zealand, we advice Kiwi’s to be cautious of where they gamble online.

The Escalation of Illegal Sports Betting in New Zealand

New Zealand’s decision to welcome its citizens back into the spiral of sporting events had engendered an obnoxious denouement. This episode greeted an amalgamation of enthusiasts and people deploying their faculties for illegal offshore bookmakers, paving a way into stadiums in Auckland.

Three episodes occurred where people were apprehended for conveying games to Asia from the Auckland Netball Centre in the premiere rounds of the ANZ Premiership. People involved in such activity are termed as courtsiders. And these people embark on point-by-point exegesis to dissident gambling syndicates to gain an edge on the wagering market instability. This marked the first time such activity was identified in the history of a netball game in New Zealand.

However, the head of events, Kate Agnew, anticipated such an occurrence being one among the few live sports that permitted audiences. Therefore, they were better prepared to combat this situation. Though courtsiding is not a criminal activity, it is a breach of regulations laid down at a stadium. This resulted in the offenders being handed over to the scrutiny of Sport New Zealand and the police.

Sports Betting

The eschewing of spot betting from sports can only be facilitated by a team effort that ensures a sector-wide crackdown on the activity. The comprehensive integrity unit for sports worldwide is a stronghold when it approaches all sports. For the amateurs in the industry, identifying courtsiders can be an arduous task.

At the same time, if you are seasoned with immense experience, the subtle practice of courtsiders can transcend to apparent deviance from the average audience. The whole process involved is a simple and straightforward one executed by the stadium security staff by eliminating courtsiders after seizing their details, which includes their photo ID.

The act of prohibiting such activity was to advocate fairness, considering those legitimately betting in games. This deviation cannot be regarded as anti-betting. Still, the issue arises because courtsiding disrupts the justice and equity under which betting occurs – against the concept of a level playing field. Therefore, such activities have an absolute edge as the outcome of the game is manipulated, and therefore, courtsiding is scowled.

The Way Out

The first solution can be complete legalisation similar to the UK Gambling Commission that dawned in 2007 to administer all diverse forms of gambling and betting activities. Such an authority enables gambling to be conducted in a transparent manner. Sweden also is another country that follows the supervision of a regulatory body termed the Spelinspektionen.

Another quick fix is facilitated by partial legalisation. An example is the United States of America, where particular state lawmakers have legalised sports betting. Some of the states that permit sports betting is Nevada, New Jersey, Delaware, West Virginia, to name a few.

Yet another antidote is the state-controlled forms of gambling in both online and offline platforms, as witnessed in Finland and Canada. Finland has three bodies responsible, and these are RAY, Veikkaus Oy, and Fintoto Oy. At the same time, in Canada, the province of Ontario functions under a monopoly system.
